Tasty Tales

May 2012

As well as growing fruit and veg we have been growing stories. These pictures are from a story
'The Jungle of the Mischievous apples', and we hope to make it into a book. The words aren't written yet so please come and join us to finish it

Here are some tasty stories from friends we met at the St. Barnabas Community Fete on Saturday 10 September.

Most memorable meal:

"Was a school dinner style sausage and mash that we had at a small Devonshire pub on our first date.
The place looked wonderful but the food was truly hideous!"

"Thai Meal. Shrimp pad chow. Chicken pad chow. Shared with glass of wine. My partner got hiccups because he swallowed a chili."

"Our family favourite meal is smoked pork loin, sauerkraut and bread dumplings. A recipe from Salzburg, Austria."

"My favourite family recipe is Cucumber Cake...It doesn't really have cucumbers in it. It was a chocolate and cream merengue  cake but my mum said it had cucumbers in it so I wouldn't eat it. She knew I didn't like cucumbers. Now we still call it cucumber cake."

"My favourite meal is Spaghetti Bolognese. It was the first meal I ever cooked on my own! and it has to be with garlic bread. I was so pleased that I made it by myself at such a young age."

"Seated shoulder-to-shoulder with local Italian diners in a back street restaurant in a suburb of Rome. I was served the most beautifully cooked beef fillet that I have ever tasted. I savoured it for such a long time that by the time we had finished, my girlfriend and I were the last two in the restaurant. Heaven!"

Desert Island Meal:

"Guacamole with Pitta Breads, smoked salmon. Morroccan spiced lamb with couscous. Rum-soaked Pineapple fritters (barbecued). Bendincks mint chocolates. YEP!" (Peter, aged 53)

"One day I collected all my favourite food and packed it up to take to a peaceful island on the lake. They were yorksher puddings, mushrooms, peas, eclairs, and 2 cheese sandwiches. I went out in my rowing boat to the island. I spent a morning exploring rockpools and climbing trees. When I was finally tired I sat down to eat lunch. I ate 4 mushrooms, yorksher puddings, some peas, one eclair and half a sandwich. I started walking back to the boat but low and behold the boat had sunk! I spent 3 days stranded on the Island, before a fisherman picked me up. Luckily I had a lot of food and there was a spring up the island. So food saved my life!" (Isabella, aged 8)

"Magical Meat:
I remember the smell so very well, of mum's special stewed steak in a rich gravy sauce. I also recall aggling the chunks of meat all shiny and enticing, just too much to resist. As mum turned her back for 10 minutes I used to tip toe up to the stove and fish out a great lump of delicious steak, and pop into my mouth and digest it as quickly as possible. No time to chew it well enough, I could not get enough of the stuff, in would go another lump then another 2 or 3 and before you know it all the meat was missing and the culprit was me.
As mum returned she would stand and say where's all the meat? I dunno I would grunt, it's magic meat you see!
Where's all the meat gone Wendy - and I would say - 'Don't ask me' :)"

"Food memory from Ireland as a child:
Coming home from school at lunchtime with not a lot of time to eat but having mashed potatoes and red lucheon sausage meat - my mum had ready. Filing the luncheon sausage with mashed potato and making it into a little edible red riding hood! Yummy and easy to eat with the fingers. Kept me going for the cycle back to school + the afternoon."

"For 3 years I'd tried to make Yorshire Puddings as well as my mum's... I finally succeeded once and text a photo of the beauties to my friends! (Nicola, aged 28)"
